Homework 11

1. Over the past week i have taken a lot of pictures, the first thing i took a picture of was food. Food represents our culture a lot, most people’s days revolve around what kind of food they are going to eat that day. Also America is one of the fattest countries in the world if not the fattest, so our culture has a lot to do with food. Another picture i took of was a TV, too me a lot of people watch tv, including myself. Sometimes the tv takes up too much time of their lives but for me it really doesn’t i watch what i want then don’t watch it anymore.

2.

here is a painting of a baseball glove, ball, and bat. I choose this one because baseball has such a huge impact on my life. Without it in my life i wouldn’t be who i am today. During the summer my life is revolved around baseball, i watch my brother and i play myself. Next year i am transferring to clarion university to play, so baseball will be in my life even more, if that is possible. I have been playing baseball since the beginning of my life, ever since i could walk i have been playing. If it wasn’t with my brother and his friends it would be by myself and with my imaginary friends. My life is baseball and without it i wouldn’t know what to do on a daily basis.

Homework 9:

1. The first one I think is rude to talk about is politics. This is because whenever you bring up politics to people, they automatically have their own personal opinion and if you bring in a different opinion to them it can end very badly in a fight. The second one is religion, everyone believes in his or her own beliefs about religion. So if one person thinks there religion is better than someone else’s, it could end of the same way as politics, a fight. The third one could be income; people like to keep how much they make to themselves. Everyone doesn’t like to flaunt his or her money out there.

2. In the United States a lot of the grandparents never live with their children, unlike in Thailand the grandparents are encouraged to move in with their children if they get too old. For the second one it says that it is considered being selfish and greedy if you become rich in Thailand but in the United States people strive to become rich and famous one day.

3. One thing I do that other people in other countries would think is wrong is my family only eats together at the table possible 5-10 times a year. With all of our schedules never working out in high school we never had time to sit down and eat. My dad is a baseball coach and he is also working on a project to make our baseball field one of the best in the state, so he is never home. I always had practice for sports so I was rarely home. My mom does a lot of work with our family business so she is always up there doing something. Finally my brother is home for only 3 months so it’s hard for all of us to sit down and eat. Our sit down meals consist of Christmas and thanksgiving and whenever we go see him we sometimes get to go out to eat with him, but rarely.

Homework 8:

1. Not all girls are tall blondes with a curvy body. Also not everyone lives a happy life. I think TV and movie portray this because in movies and TV the people they act like are not real. They play a fake character, so they can live a very happy life and also look as beautiful as the director wants them to be. But in real life everyone does not live a perfect life and is not as beautiful as people in movies.

2. It describes Americans view of time by saying time is money. Also it says that Americans love to be on time because it shows respect to the other people you are going to meet. I think we choose to view time in this manner because really time is money. If you waist time you won’t have any money. Also being on time is really respectful, if you are late it is disrespectful and that’s a bad first impression if you are late somewhere.

3. It explains why people don’t like interruptions, it makes a lot of sense because people need to be done at a certain time and if you have a lot of interruptions then everything will be out of whack. Sometimes in certain situations they are aloud in and around my family because my family accepts them and then gets by and figures everything out. They are not considered positive or negative.

4. I did not know the United States has a landmass of 9,629,091 square kilometers. That’s about 6 million miles. When you think about that, that’s a huge amount of land. It just blows my mind that the landmass of the United States is that much. But when you think about it we do have a pretty big country.

Homework 6:

1. Some influences that have shaped my body images are the athletes in professional sports. Let’s say Lebron James, he is obviously a freak athlete but has huge muscles and is a beast. My body image is whatever I want it to be, nothing really makes me want to lose weight or gain it. Whenever I was younger I used to be a fat chubby kid, and the only thing I say to myself now is never get back to those days. I always focus on lifting weights and eating the foods that are right for me to eat.

2. I do think American culture has different expectations on men and women regarding body image because the women are supposed to look like models and obviously not all girls are supposed to look like that. All men are supposed to look like huge body builders, and not everyone can look like that either. So that’s two completely different expectations on men and women on how they are supposed to look.

Macho man

1. In charge, big muscles, and don’t cry. The first one in charge comes to mind because when you think of a man you think that they are usually in charge. The next ne big muscles, the word masculine to me makes me think of guys with big muscles. Lastly don’t cry, you never think of a guy crying so that’s why I put don’t cry

2. Males are pressured to act masculine when they are around other males. When they are around other males it would be weird for them to act like a girl. The other way males are pressured to act masculine is at a funeral, they aren’t supposed to be crying like a baby, they are supposed to act professional and stay strong. The first one is helpful to males, you want males to act like they are supposed to around other males, and not act like a girl. The second one can be harmful and helpful at the same time by you don’t really want to be crying a lot to show that, but at the same time you do want to let out some of your emotions in a tough situation such as a funeral.

Homework 4:

1. Whenever you buy material goods like TV’s, video game systems, and so on, you will spend more time with those goods, Which means you will be alone a lot more often and stop spending time with your community, neighbors, etc.

2. I don’t think it would fix any problems because if you have a higher salary that means you will want to buy more things. So if you want to buy more things then you will have more items to play with, spend time with. So my answer is no it would not fix any of the problems from number 1.

3. The kind of car you drive, the clothes you wear, and also the kind of house you live in.

4. Competitive consumption influences my identity by I always like to have a nice pair of shoes. Shoes are my kind of thing, so whenever I have a nice new pair of kicks, I always feel good. For my friends I think it influences their identity by buying video games. My friends and I play a lot of video games so whenever a good new game comes out and everyone gets it we also have to get it.

Homework 3:

1. I think it could be likely; anything is really possible in this world. In our lifetimes though, I’m not too sure about that. Lets say I live to be a hundred years old (hopefully not because that is way too old) I would live till 2093, it is currently 2012, So in 81 years they actually could create a lot of robots. Now that I think about it I really think they could happen in our lifetime. Also, the public reaction would be confused. People wouldn’t know what to do, with all the exploding, shooting, and confused robots around the world; I think people would be confused and hide somewhere so nothing bad would happen to them.

2. I think it is kind of likely, maybe a 45% chance out of 100%. I think this because the human body is an extremely complex thing. For us to think by ourselves is second nature, but for someone to create something to think by itself is very hard. It makes my head hurt just thinking about that right now. If they do create something that thinks on its own it will change our human identities by making it like nothing is real anymore. If people can create robots that think and act on their own, then why should anyone really try at anything they do, if a robot can do everything on its own then there is really no use for us to do anything. To me that would be a waste, to create a robot that completely thinks and acts on its own.

3. A positive about developing an artificial intelligence would be you would have some help. Lets say house mothers, they are so busy all the time with the kids, cooking, cleaning, and everything else they do, but if you had a robot to help you it would make everything just a little bit easier. A negative would be if the robot could think and act all by itself, then maybe it could turn bad and just go on a killing spree.

4. Of course I had a machine or a computer fail on me, it happens literally every day. Today when I got back to school (from my hometown) I said to myself I have a lot of homework so I’m going to start right when I get back. I got back around 730 and guess what happens, my Internet wont work. Not a surprise, so I messed with it for maybe 2 hours. Finally I figure it out, but I’m already really tired and I still have 2-3 more hours of homework. I don’t think it was my computers fault, it was IUP Internet, I’m just not too big of a fan of their Internet.

Homework 2:

1. At the beginning of the article I thought Mother Teresa was the most admirable. After the author gave us some facts about what Norman Borlaug did, I still didn’t change my answer because Mother Teresa had a huge impact on so many people. Some moral thoughts that led me to this decision were that she spent her whole life caring about other people and also with just helping out one person, it can make a huge impact on a lot of people.

2. The first I would choose would be my brother. My brother has had a huge impact on my life since I was born. We would do everything together when we were younger and we still do. Another reason why my brother is admirable to me is because he came through a lot of adversity to get to were he is today, he went through an almost career ending arm injury. Also whenever nobody believed in him when he was doing bad in his first couple years I believed in him and always stayed behind him because I know he could get where he is today. The last thing I admire about my brother is all the charity work, signing autographs he does, not all major league athletes would take there time out of their busy schedule to do things with charity and sign extra autographs. The other most admirable people would be my parents; my parents worked so hard to get to be were they are today. They started a business from the bottom up and made into a really successful business. They give back a lot to the community my dad has a lot to do with Punxsutawney baseball, he runs two leagues, one ages 13-15 and another ages 16-19. My mom helps out with all the old people in the Personal Care Home, whenever I go into town people always say how nice my mom is and it really makes me think how good of parents I really have. I admire them because they are two very nice people that do a lot for the community, they put other people in front of themselves and they are two model Americans.

3. I do not believe morality is not universal because people have different beliefs and they practice different religions. Also I don’t believe that morality is universal because people don’t believe in the same things, like I have different beliefs than someone from China may have. For example China advocates the birth of males over females. I may view this as a moral and unjust but someone from China may view this moral and just.

4. The five elements of morality are harm, fairness, community, authority and purity. I think the Americans rank fairness first because we are a free society that is governed on the Constitution of the United States that promotes and advocates fairness. Some examples of fairness would be the court system, everyone gets a to plead if they are guilty or non-guilty.
